Actions of the project

ACTION A.1 Development of the Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) for Skyros island: Development of a Biodiversity Action Plan for Skyros island. The BAP is the umbrella project action and deals with all identified threats. It will analyze and evaluate the biological resource of the island and define proposals for action and thematic action plans within specific time periods. A parallel step is the development of an effective partnership with key players to identify proper actions. Also a monitoring plan for the assessment of the effectiveness of the overall BAP will be developed. This action set the base for the implementation of the concrete conservation actions.

ACTION A.2 Elaboration of the Agro-Pastoral Action Plan (APAP)ACTION A.3 Elaboration of the Wetlands Action Plan (WAP)                ACTION A.4 Elaboration of the Maple stands Action Plan (MAP) ACTION A.5 Elaboration of the Action Plan for the endemic and/or rare plants (Endemics Action Plan - EAP)

ACTION A.6 Elaboration of the Islet ecosystems Action Plan (IAP)ACTION A.7 Elaboration of the biodiversity friendly Tourism Action Plan (TAP): In the framework of the Biodiversity Action Plan, development of six thematic Action Plans (AP) is foreseen: Agro-Pastoral AP, Wetland AP, Maple stands AP, AP for the endemic and/or rare plants, Islet ecosystems AP and Biodiversity Friendly Tourism AP. These AP will analyze and propose conservation actions for the island’s important habitat and species.

ACTION B.1 Lease of pasture and agricultural land for APAP demonstration project

ACTION B.2 Lease of 5 adjacent islets for the implementation of the IEAP: Lease of land. Pasture and agricultural land will be leased in order to be used for the demonstration of i) sustainable grazing practices, ii) cultivation of traditional fodder varieties and iii) cultivation of the traditional local variety of fava beans. In addition, 5 islets will be provided for the implementation of the actions relevant to the problems from invasive and problematic species.

ACTION C.1 Implementation of the Agro-Pastoral Action Plan (APAP): pastureland management

ACTION C.2 Implementation of the Agro Pastoral Action Plan: cultivation of abandoned island terraces

ACTION C.3 Implementation of the Agro-Pastoral Action Plan (APAP): small scale habitat improvement interventions: Implementation of 3 concerted actions for the demonstration of the re-orientation of the present agro-pastoral model. According to the prescription of the Agro-Pastoral Action Plan, controlled grazing will be applied by the local livestock, involving also the local Skyrian horse semi – wild herds,  demonstrating the appropriate grazing activities in a biodiversity compatible way. Also, local varieties of fodder crops, as well as fava beans, will be cultivated, involving the use of the Skyrian horse. Small scale habitat improvement interventions will also be implemented for the enhancement of the island’s biodiversity.

ACTION C.4 Implementation of the Wetlands Action Plan (WAP): Demonstration of island wetlands restoration. According to the prescriptions of the Wetland Action Plan, different types of wetland habitats will be created, in order to provide suitable sites to local wildlife and migratory birds.

ACTION C.5 Implementation of the Maple stands Action Plan (MAP): Restoration of the regeneration potential of maple stands. Fencing of existing maple stands, as well as enrichment of the populations of maples by outplanting plantlets will be carried out.

ACTION C.6 Implementation of the Endemic and/ or rare plants Action Plan (EAP): Conservation of the rare and endemic plants of Skyros. According to the Endemic and/or rare plants Action Plan and depending to the plants taxa, several methods will be applied, including fencing, grazing ban, construction of traditional anti-erosion walls, etc.

ACTION C.7 Implementation of the Islet Ecosystems Action Plan (IEAP) Conservation of Skyros islet seabird colonies and dealing with the problems from invasive and problematic species. Rat eradications operations will be implemented on selected islets with colonies of Calonectris diomedea, Puffinus yelkouan and Falco eleonorae. In addition, various gull control techniques will be tested at least on one islet. Both actions include a post-action monitoring to assess the progress and effectiveness of the selected methods. The previous experience of HOS in applying rat eradication and gull control in Greece ensures the correct implementation of this action. Artificial nests and shrub cover will be created to reduce the exposure of nests, eggs and nestlings to sun and heat.

ACTION C.8 Management interventions implemented by the HOS Local Conservation Group  Establishment and development of a Local Conservation Group (LCG) in the project area. LCG will be a group of volunteers in the frame of the BirdLife IBA Caretaker Network of conservation volunteers and will be trained in implementing conservation, management and monitoring of local biodiversity and threats.
